CONSTANTINE-Algeria managed to adapt its agricultural policy to climate changes, stressed Sunday in Constantine Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishery Abdeslam Chelghoum.
“The development program of agriculture decided by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika provided for strategies adapted to specificities of our regions and climate changes,” Chelghoum stressed on the occasion of the celebration of the World Food day, in the presence of Minister of Water Resources and Environment Abdelkader Ouali and representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).”
Orientation, rationalization and awareness-raising efforts are being made to meet the “current challenges induced by global climate changes,” the minister added.
In this regard, Chelghoum highlighted the dangers resulting from climate changes and stated that Algeria seeks to ensure sustainable food security while adapting itself to climate changes.
“The challenge is great,” stressed the minister, who called for mobilizing all available means and capacities to establish an “updated” agricultural policy that can meet the dangers induced by climate change.
The legal framework adopted by Algeria to stop the effects of pollution, promotion of the rural environment and rationalization of water resources exploitation are among the solutions to “improve and perpetuate” food security in the country.
The agricultural sector contributes with 10% to the GDP, Chelghoum said, stressing that the agricultural production value exceed USD 30 billion per year, i.e. a growth rate of 7%.
