NEW YORK – Algeria has been elected on Monday at the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/the United Nations Population Fund, (UNFPA)/ United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS),
during the elections of the subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held in New York.
Algeria obtained the overwhelming majority of votes, taking 52 votes out of 54.
This strong support received by Algeria during its election to this body is a recognition of its role and its contribution to the United Nations work, notably in particular to the implementation of the policies formulated by the UN General Assembly and by the Economic and Social Council.
This election follows the renewal for one year of cooperation programs between Algeria and the UNDP.
The election of Algeria within the UNDP Executive Board will certainly reinforce collaboration and partnership with this UN body.
Subsequently to this election, Algeria will sit at the UN Executive Board for three-year term, starting 1 January 2021.
The UNDP / UNFPA / UNOPS Executive Board, established by General Assembly resolution 48/162, is under the authority of ECOSOC and primarily responsible for supporting and supervising the activities of UN agencies in accordance with the guidelines of the General Assembly and the United Nations Economic and Social Council. It is made up of 36 member states.
Besides Algeria, Bangladesh, Cuba, Guatemala, Finland, Iran, New Zealand, Nigeria, Russia, Spain and Great Britain were elected to serve on the Executive Board of the UNDP / UNFPA / UNOPS.
