ALGIERS – General Director for fisheries and aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Taha Hammouche said Sunday in
Algiers that Algeria has recovered its place within the international fishing institutions
The country’s bluefin tuna fishing quota has also been multiplied to reach 1,650 tonnes in 2020.
In a statement to APS, Hammouche said that “Algeria has been elected on Friday, as vice-president of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM).”
Coming under the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the GFCM’s mission is to manage and organize fishing activity in the Mediterranean region.
Algeria has been elected following the Conference on the initiative for the blue economy sustainable development in the Western Mediterranean, held in Algiers on 3- 4 December. The Conference was co-chaired by Algeria and France and saw the participation of 400 experts, including 100 foreign experts.
During the conference, 31 important joint projects on the blue economy development in the region were elaborated, said the General Director for fisheries and aquaculture.
In October 2018, Algeria has been elected president of the Maghreb Network of Research Centres for Fisheries Development and in December 13th, vice president at the Executive Council of the Arab Union of Fish Producers, added Hammouche.
In this regard, he recalled that Algeria also obtained last November the “ICCAT” licence, delivered by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, for the creation of three tuna fattening farms.
