ALGIERS-The United Nations Children and Education Fund (UNICEF) lauded the commitment of Algeria to constantly protecting children and ensuring their rights to education and health.
UNICEF Representative in Algeria, Marc Lucet emphasized in a statement to APS “the Algerian State’s ongoing commitment to protecting youth and ensuring their right to education and health,” expressing Algeria’s willingness to “share its experience with other countries in the region.”
On the occasion of the celebration of the United Nations Universal Children’s Day, Lucet said that Algeria “is a leader at the African level and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region under the implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and is among the countries that achieved the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), notably in terms of education.”
As for UNICEF’s cooperation programme for the period 2016-2020, the UN Representative said that this cooperation focuses on priority aspects to Algeria in the area of child, notably “early childhood development.”
Emphasizing the progress made for the benefit of children, the speaker focused on the 6th national multiple indicator survey (MICS6) on the population’s health launched by the Ministry of Health, the Population and Hospital Reform in collaboration with the UNICEF.
The survey targets a sample of 31,000 families from various regions and aims to highlight the progress made vis-à-vis the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the national development goals.
The survey, whose results would be announced next year, affects the various aspects related to health, education and living conditions.
Similar surveys took place in Algeria, including MICS1 in 1995, MICS3 in 2000, MICS3 in 2006 and MICS4 in 2013.
