ALGIERS- Minister for Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel on Wednesday in Algiers underlined the need for reforming the Arab League in order to adapt to the new regional and international conjuncture marked by globalization.
“We are experiencing a different international context, marked with globalization, so it is important that the Arab League adapts (to this context),”
Messahel told a news conference on the assessment of the decisions of the 27th Arab Summit of Nouakchott, and on the meeting of Africa -China Cooperation Forum, scheduled for 28 -30 July in Beijing.
Messahel recalled that “since the 2005 Arab League Summit in Algiers,” Algeria “has always been working for the reform of the Arab League.”
“There is a process of reforms which has been set up,” he said while announcing an “important meeting of the permanent representatives on August 3rd in Cairo and which will make proposals to the ministerial meeting planned on September 3rd in the Egyptian capital.”
On the 27th Arab Summit, Messahel said that it was held in “a very difficult time for the Arab countries.”
“The holding of this summit for the first time in Mauritania was a challenge for this country which has only three and a half months to organize it
after the withdrawal of another member country (Morocco),” he added, praising the Mauritanian people and their leaders for the” successful” the summit.
The Summit examined “usual” questions, namely the big conflicts in the Arab countries (Libya, Iraq, Yemen and Syria).
The minister said that concerning those four questions, the Algerian approach “is wholly synonymous with the Arab approach.”
Explaining this approach, Messahel said that “we have always favored the political solution to these conflicts, dialogue among the different parties to conflicts, solutions under the auspices of UN and solutions based on the respect of those countries’ territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.”
“We cannot but be satisfied with this approach and this consensus on the need for finding solutions for these conflicts,” he added.
