CAIRO- Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel has participated, Wednesday in Cairo, in the tripartite (Algeria-Egypt-Tunisia) meeting on the situation in Libya.
The meeting, which follows that held in Algiers in June, was attended by the Foreign ministers of Egypt Sameh Choukry and of Tunisia Khemaies Jhinaoui.
During the meeting, Messahel underlined the importance to maintain regular consultation between Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia on the situation in Libya, which has had a direct impact on the stability of the entire region, with a view to “contributing to the rapid resolution of the Libyan crisis.”
In this regard, he stressed the need for “vigilance to address security challenges, especially terrorism, the return of foreign terrorist fighters, as well as illegal migration.”
Messahel also reiterated “the commitment of Algeria, which has maintained contacts with all Libyan parties, to continuing its efforts for the support of the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for Libya, Ghassane Salame, in the fulfilment of his mission for the rapid restoration of stability in Libya and building of strong institutions in this country.”
For his part, Sameh Choukry said that the meeting is part of regular consultations between the three countries to support jointly the UN-sponsored process for the settlement of the Libyan crisis.
In this regard, he underlined his country’s efforts to “bridge the positions of Libyan parties in order to find a consensual solution that guarantees the restoration of stability in the country.”
The Tunisian Foreign minister, Khemaies Jhinaoui stressed the need for the three countries “to work together with a view to creating the necessary conditions to ensure the success of the UN efforts for the restoration of stability in Libya, and prevent further chaos, which benefits criminal terrorist groups in the region.”
The meeting culminated in the adoption of a joint statement, which underlines the convergence of views between the two countries on the support of the UN-sponsored settlement process, in accordance with the Libyan political accord and through dialogue and reconciliation between the Libyan stakeholders.
They also emphasized the need to continue regular consultation to that end.
