ALGIERS- Algeria has been re-elected as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council by majority of votes, said Thursday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
“The African Union Executive Council on Thursday has renewed the members of AU Peace and Security Council. The voting, which was conducted by secret ballots, culminated in the re-election of Algeria as member of the Council by majority of votes, i.e. more than two-thirds of votes,” said the statement.
Algeria, which sat in the AU Peace and Security Council from 2013 to 2016, has been re-elected for a new term in office, owing to its key role and strategic contribution to the consolidation of peace and stability in the continent as well as to its significant contribution to the strengthening of AU capacity and efficiency in addressing the various problems affecting the continent’s security,” added the statement.
The AU Executive Council also endorsed the candidacy of Algeria’s Ahmed Djoghlaf and Boualem Bouguetaia to the positions of the executive director of United Nations Environment Programme and the president of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, said the Ministry’s statement.
