Algeria wants “deep reform” of Arab League
APS : Tuesday, 25 April 2017
ALGIERS- Arab League’s deep reform is one of “Algeria’s priorities during its presidency of the organization’s council at the ministerial level,”
Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel said Monday.
Algeria, which holds the rotating presidency of the the Arab League Council at the ministerial level until September 2017, has set priorities, including a “deep reform of the Arab League,” Messahel told Canal Algerie TV station.
Noting that most major conflicts are in the Arab region (Syria, Yemen and Iraq), Messahel said the “Arab League is unable to manage the situation in those countries or take the (appropriate) decisions.”
“The Arab League has not the capacity to be an important actor because it has not made the necessary changes,” he regretted.
Citing the example of African Union’s evolution since its creation and the goals met so far for the development of the continent, Messahel greeted the “major progress achieved and the reform undertaken by the AU, wishing that the “Arab League dos likewise.”
