Algerian-Italian relations bearing mark of friendship, mutual respect
APS : Sunday, 04 November 2018
ALGIERS – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will pay on Monday a working visit to Algiers.
The visit is intended to be an opportunity to strengthen the political dialogue between the two countries,
whose relations are traditionally marked by the seal of friendship and mutual respect.
It “aims at enhancing the high-level political dialogue between Algeria and Italy; which are bound by a Treaty of friendship, good neighborhood and cooperation, signed by President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and his Italian counterpart in Algiers in 2003,” said the Presidency of the Republic in a statement.
Algeria and Italy will take the opportunity of this visit to “exchange views on the common interest issues concerning the Mediterranean, Maghreb and Sahel regions,” added the same source.
Italy had shown solidarity and support during the 1990s when Algeria was confronting terrorism.
The relations between Algeria and Italy are marked by high-quality political dialogue and bilateral cooperation as well.
Algiers and Rome also have a strategic dialogue on political, security and counterterrorism issues, which is an “important mechanism for consultation”.
A number of regional and international issues of common interest should be discussed during this visit, notably the fight against transnational terrorism and illegal migration, as well as the situation in Libya, Western Sahara, Sahel, especially in Mali.
On all these issues, Algeria and Italy are permanently coordinating their efforts, especially those related to the situation in Libya.
Algeria backs a political solution and an inclusive dialogue of the Libyan parties with respect for the unity, sovereignty and integrity of Libya. Italy shares the same vision and believes that the solution must come from the Libyans, themselves, without any foreign interference.
