ORAN- A North African network for sea turtle protection has been created recently with the aim to contributing to the preservation of the endangered Mediterranean species, members of the network told APS on Sunday.
The network comprises associations, researchers and academics from Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Egypt, said Dr Mouloud Benabdi, researchers at Oran University, specialist in marine biology and member of the marine ecology association “Barbarous.”
The creation of the network follows a meeting of North African institutions and associations operating in the field of sea turtle protection, held in Tunis, Tunisia, on 16 and 17 July at the initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
Sea turtles stranding are often reported on Algerian coasts. They are either struck by boat propellers or accidentally caught in fishing nets.
In this regard, Benabdi underlined the importance of associations’ role in raising awareness of the need to protect the species.
