ALGIERS – President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune said on Thursday, that Algeria’s foreign policy remains “constantly” committed to the peaceful settlement of disputes and dialogue,
particularly in Africa, adding that the conflict in Western Sahara is a question of decolonization that must be resolved through the holding of self-determination referendum.
In a televised address to the nation, President Tebboune expressed Algeria’s “satisfaction” with the agreement reached by the Libyan parties in Switzerland. This «agreement is satisfactory for Algeria which deployed diplomatic efforts so a peaceful settlement of the crisis in this country is possible, » he said
The President of the Republic said that the Algerian diplomacy has not ceased to insist that the solution must be Libyan, under the supervision of the United Nations.
The Geneva meetings resulted in the election of a new Libyan leadership that was assigned the tasks of organizing general elections on next December 24th.
Broaching the situation in the Sahel, President Tebboune «welcomed» the recently held meeting of the Monitoring Committee of the Malian Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, in the northern city of Mali, Kidal.
Years after the signing by the Malian parties of the Agreement, the Monitoring Committee recently met in Kidal (northern Mali), under the auspices of the Malian authorities.
This meeting is likely to push forward the implementation of the agreement, which resulted from Algiers process in a way that could restore the lost peace in the north of the country, he said.
With regard to the conflict in Western Sahara, the President of the Republic said that “Algeria’s position is clear.”
This is a question of decolonization of “Africa’s last colony. The only solution requires enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.”
As for the Palestinian question , Tebboune renewed Algeria’s firm, principled and unconditional stance in support of the right of the Palestinian people to regain all of their usurped rights and establish their independent state on the 1967 borders, with full sovereignty and Al Quds as its capital, on the basis of the Arab Peace Initiative.
