NEW YORK (United Nations)- Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Sofiane Mimouni, reiterated Algeria’s consistent position in favour to Western Sahara people’s inalienable right to self-determination in line with the international legality, regretting the consequences of United Nations’ inaction regarding this non-autonomous territory.
Speaking before the Committee on Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) at the UN General Assembly, Mimouni said “there is no ambiguity about the nature of Western Sahara conflict and it can be solved only through the free and genuine expression of Western Sahara people’s will.”
The representative of Algeria said the United Nations and the African Union had reiterated, in a joint statement last February, their commitment to the settlement of Western Sahara conflict within the framework of international legality.
Ignoring these facts, he added, “would amount to departing from the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, including the inalienable right of Western Sahara people to self-determination.”
Similarly, ignoring this reality would mean to “deviate from the terms of the settlement plan, approved by both parties to the conflict and endorsed by the Security Council, and run the risk of running counter to the efforts of the international community to complete decolonization of Western Sahara,” he said.
The Permanent Representative to the UN expressed Algeria’s concern about the stalemate of the political process, conducted under the aegis of the United Nations, for the settlement of Western Sahara issue.
