ALGIERS – Algeria remains attached to its position and principle of “non-interference” in its political affairs and those of other countries, reaffirmed Monday Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel,
calling for dialogue and national reconciliation for the settlement of conflicts.
“Algeria stands by its political position of non-interference in the affairs of Algeria and the internal affairs of other countries. This is one of the fundamentals of the Algerian diplomacy,” Messahel said in the margin of the celebration of the 56th anniversary of the Algerian Diplomacy Day under the theme of “The Diplomacy of peace and reconciliation.”
President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika has always called for dialogue and talks to resolve the conflicts, without any interference, “because we believe that the solution lies in dialogue among the different parties to conflicts” likewise in Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Libya, said Messahel.
With the Algerian experience, “it has been confirmed that the Algerian-advocated approach of negotiations and non-interference is efficient to resolve conflicts.
Algeria has given a lesson to the world and the Algerian approach based on the national reconciliation has been approved and recognized worldwide to become a reference for the settlement of conflicts.”
Questioned on the situation in Syria, he visited in 2016 to convey a message of national reconciliation, Messahel has insisted on the need to implement this approach to settle the crisis.
“There are no other alternatives but the national reconciliation if we really want to resolve conflicts,” he said.
The solution “must stem from the people themselves …, we call for dialogue and reconciliation,” concluded Messahel.
The Algerian Diplomacy Day is celebrated on October 8 of each year. It is an event that coincides with the day when the first president of independent Algeria Ahmed Ben Bella raised the colors of the Algerian flag at the UN headquarters in New York on October 8, 1962.
