ALGIERS- Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy Fatima-Zohra Zerouati on Tuesday stressed Algeria’s strict compliance with the commitments contained in the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
“Algeria has pledged, like all signatory countries of the Montreal Protocol (1987), to gradually eliminate those chemical substances and has removed so far 1,850 tonnes of ozone-depleting substances (ODS),” the minister said in an address marking the International Day of Ozone Layer.
The figure accounts for 85% of the total quantity to be eliminated, she added.
Algeria was the first country to call, in March 1989, for the creation of a fund for technical and financial support to developing countries, which was indeed created a year later, Zerouati noted.
The minister said Algeria has managed to eliminate ozone-depleting substances through a large number of projects, especially those relating to technical skills transfer via modern technologies, training a great number of specialists and technicians, adoption of a legal arsenal and banning of ODS imports.
