ALGIERS- Algeria strongly condemned Saturday, through the spokesman of the ministry of Foreign Affairs, the deadly attack against the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO),
expressing indignation in the face of the recurrent attacks against the UN peacekeeping forces and against the “flagrant and unacceptable violations” perpetrated by armed groups.
“We strongly condemn the deadly terrorist attack that targeted, Thursday evening, 7 December 2017, a base of the operational company of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO), in the province of North-Kivu, and which caused several casualties among the peacekeeping soldiers (blue helmets) and the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
“We bow our heads in memory of the blue helmets and the soldiers of Congo’s armed forces fallen while performing their duties at the service of peace, and offer our sincere condolences to the families of the victims, their respective governments, the MONUSCO and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” Abdelaziz Benali Cherif said in a statement to APS.
“Our thoughts are also with the wounded, wishing them a speedy recovery.”
“We remain convinced that despite the current difficulties, the MONUSCO will manage to successfully carry out its noble mission at the service of peace in our sister nation, especially in protecting civilians, stabilizing the country and supporting the implementation of the framework agreement restoring peace and stability in RD Congo and the region,” Benali Cherif said.
Thursday evening’s attack against MONUSCO in North-Kivu left at least 15 people dead and more than 50 wounded.
