ALGIERS-Director of the African Centre for the Study and Research on Terrorism (ACRST) Larry Gbevlo-Lartey Esq announced Wednesday that Algeria will host a meeting on Libya in late December to find solutions to the security situation in this country.
“The meeting, which will be at the ACRST headquarters, aims to find solutions to prevent the spread of the terrorist threat to other countries in the region,” said Gbevlo-Lartey at the opening of the ACRST’s 10th Focal Points meeting in Algiers.
“The workshop will be attended by countries having common borders with Libya to involve them in the search for the origin of the problem and solutions,” the ACRST official said.
The same official stressed that “the situation in Libya is at the heart of the concerns of the African Union and neighbouring countries,” urging “all States to pursue their effort in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism since they are the main reasons behind this scourge.”
“We currently aim to draw up recommendations on prevention of violence and extremism, and then submit them to the AU Security Council. I think that we are on the right path,” he added.
In this regard, he highlighted “the need for studying and anticipating ramifications of a possible reversal of the situation in AU member States neighbouring Libya while setting up an adequate mechanism in counterterrorism cooperation through significant means to adequately respond to the terrorist threat and stability of countries.”
“These works will continue part of support to the initiatives being launched by the Peace and Security Department under the competent leadership of the Commissioner and Ambassador Smail Chergui on the situation in Libya,” stressed Gbevlo-Lartey.
Regretting the persistence of the transnational terrorist threat despite counterterrorism mechanisms, the ACRST director “underscored the importance of identifying priorities and exchanging experiences during this meeting.”
Besides, Gbevlo-Lartey seized this opportunity to identify some urgent priorities, as the creation of an appropriate library for Research and study, the building of a conference room for the ACRST and supporting field work by providing modern research facilities.
