PARIS- The unstable political and security situation in Libya “is a major concern for us,” said Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel in an interview with the monthly magazine, Arabies.
“The unstable political and security situation in the neighbouring Libya (…) as well as the presence of terrorist groups, are a major concern for us (…),” said Messahel.
In this regard, the minister underlined that Algeria is working with all Libya’s neighbouring countries, in coordination with the United Nations to rapidly reach a political solution between the Libyan parties without any external interference or foreign intervention.
Messahel said that the absence of “legitimate, strong and just” authority and institutions favours the expansion of terrorist groups and their criminal activities.
He also underlined the urgent need for Libya to form a central government that would combat the terrorist groups on its territory.
The minister said that according to different sources, there are few dozens of Algerian nationals present in the conflict areas, “most of them have dual nationality and left their countries of residence, or their native countries for some of them, and not Algeria,” he added.
In this regard, he explained that the Algerian security services have strengthened border surveillance, adding that the Algerian State was among the first country in the world to adopt a law that severely penalizes the involvement of Algerian nationals in terrorist actions abroad.
