JIJEL (Algeria)- Minister of Industry and Mines Youcef Yousfi said Sunday in Jijel that Bellara Steel Complex is “an incentive for further partnerships with State of Qatar.
In a statement to the press, during his visit to the complex with Qatari Minister of Energy and Industry Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Yousfi stressed that this “important” complex is the one of the largest ones in the African continent.
The Minister expressed his satisfaction with the project’s estimated completion rate of 80%, according to data presented on site. He also estimated that the complex’s large production capacity of 4 million tonnes / year will meet local needs and then be directed to international markets.
As for him, Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada said that that the project “represents a major achievement and example for the two countries cooperation.”
This important social and economic project created 1,800 direct jobs, said chairman of the complex’s Board of Governors Mohamed Sakhr Hrami.
General Manager of the Algerian-Qatari Steel Company Youcef Ahmed El Mehendi said that the last nine units of the Steel Complex would be delivered “next May” which would allow reaching, in a first stage an annual production capacity of 2 million tonnes. Later, the complex is projected to produce 4 million tonnes of steel products.
He also added that the challenge has been to start production in parallel with the construction works of the various and the start of operation of the 750,000 tonne year capacity mill Unit number 1.
Unit number 3 with the same capacity is currently in the testing stage while Unit 2 with a 94% completion rate will be operational by the end of 2018, added the same official.
The two Algerian and Qatari ministers then visited the Djendjen port (Jijel) to inquire about export capabilities to international markets and followed a detailed briefing by the director of the port company.
