ALGIERS- A platform for exporting Algerian products to Senegal will be soon set up shortly in Dakar with a view to promoting Algerian non-hydrocarbon exports to this country,
announced Tuesday project initiators during a seminar on Algerian trade networks in Africa.
Named “Algerian trading counter in Senegal,” this platform aims to develop economic relations, particularly trade ones, between both countries through partnership between Algerian and Senegalese companies, explained Adib Khelef, Director General of the trade development consulting Company (Afric Emergence), initiator of this platform in partnership with the National Agency for Foreign Trade Promotion (ALGEX).
Algerian companies willing to export and invest in Senegal will receive all information on the Senegalese market in all fields, advices and assistance to finance their projects in this country, said Khelef.
Besides, Afric Emergence Company can support Algerian companies to market their products in Senegal and play an intermediary role between Algerian and Senegalese economic operators.
This trade space is the second of its kind after that of Abidjan (Ivory Coast) launched in 2015 as part of Algeria’s approach to move towards the African market.
“This exchange and partnership platform reflects Algeria’s willingness to diversify its economy, which is increasingly oriented towards the African continent,” stressed the Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City, Interim Minister of Trade Abdelmadjid Tebboune in a message read on his behalf by ALGEX Director General Chafik Chiti.
In this regard, the minister noted that the level of trade exchange between Algeria and Africa remained low. According to the data provided by Tebboune, these exchanges, particularly oriented towards countries of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), do not exceed USD 3 billion.
As regards exchanges between Algeria and Senegal, they amount to USD 8 million, dominated by hydrocarbons. Such data do not reflect the economic potential both countries have,” said Tebboune.
For the minister, this trading counter is an opportunity for both countries to promote trade exchanges between Algeria and Senegal and develop inter-African exchanges through this member country of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union.
Products currently exported to Senegal include hydrocarbons, food-processed products and drugs while imports from this country are dominated by fishes, according to ALGEX’s data.
The agency enumerated 60 products requested by the Senegalese market where Algerian companies can operate, like agricultural products and semi-finished products.
