APS : Monday, 30 November 2015
ALGIERS – The situation in Libya and in the region will be the focus of discussions on Tuesday in Algiers at 7th ordinary ministerial meeting of Libya’s neighbouring countries.
The meeting, which comes in the aftermath of last June meeting in N’Djamena (Chad), will allow the neighbouring countries and the representatives of regional and international organizations to inform each other on the situation in Libya and the region, and to assess the latest developments, said Minister for Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League, Abdelkader Messahel.
It also follows the signing by the internationally recognized Libyan parliament of the statement supporting a national unity government, welcomed by the UN and several countries, including Algeria, deemed to be the “only way to restore the stability and preserve the unity of Libya.”
The meeting will see the participation of all neighbouring countries of Libya; Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, Niger, Chad and Tunisia, in addition to the African Union, the Arab League and the European Union.
New Special Representative of UN Secretary General for Libya Martin Kobler who succeeded Spanish Bernardino Leon will also attend the meeting.
After almost a year of negotiations, Leon had reached early October an agreement on a unity government, but the document was subsequently rejected by the two parliaments rivalling for power in Libya.
