Counterterrorism: U.S. hails Algeria’s “constructive, beneficial” role
In a letter sent to Mr Abdelkader Messahel Minister for Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the Arab League, the US State Secretary, Mr John Kerry hailed, the “constructive” and “beneficial” role of Algeria in the global counterterrorism.
He has also assured his country’s readiness to work “closely” with Algeria in this field.
“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to you, your government as well as to the Algerian president Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika, for hosting the De-radicalization Conference on last 22, 23 July,” Kerry said in his letter.
The US State Secretary said that the “conference advanced a comprehensive approach to preventing the spreading violent extremism and encouraged more governments and organizations to join the global Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) movement.”
“It also enhanced our efforts to promote concrete CVE initiatives at Leaders’ Summit on Countering ISIL and Violent Extremism on the margin of UNGA on 29 September,” he stressed.
“In hosting this conference, Algeria proved yet again the constructive and beneficial role it is playing in the global fight against terrorism,” Kerry added.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage Algeria to build on the success of its conference by spearheading the development of a comprehensive de-radicalization handbook,” the US top diplomat said, suggesting that “this handbook could capture the good practices, lessons learned and the programming models presented and discussed at the De-radicalization Conference.”
The handbook “could also highlight a range of effective and rights-respecting de-radicalization interventions- whether led by governments, civil society, the private sector, or multilateral organizations- from which interested stakeholders could draw,” Kerry said.
“The United States would be happy to work closely with you on this effort,” he ensured.
“Once more, I thank you for your leadership in hosting this important conference as follow-on of the CVE Summit, organized by the White House, last February, US State Secretary concluded.
