APS : Monday, 20 May 2019
MIDRAND (South Africa) – The Pan-African Parliament, in a resolution, commended Algeria, Rwanda and Uganda as “model countries” for the “treatment and hospitality”
they grant to refugees in host communities and invited other African countries to follow “these good practices.”
This tribute was paid during the second regular session of the fifth legislature of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) held in Midrand (South Africa) from 6 to 17 May 2019.
The session closed by the adoption of a resolution on the 2019 theme of the African Union: “Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Sustainable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa.”
The PAP urges the African Union to help “the parties to the conflicts in Africa resolve their differences in order to allow refugees to return to their countries, and to set up effective early warning systems to detect and prevent the emergence of new conflicts.”
Finally, the Pan-African Parliament is committed “to send fact-checking missions to refugee camps across the continent with the aim of ensuring continuous monitoring of their situation and guaranteeing them better protection”.
