NEW YORK (United Nations)- Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel has taken part, in New York, at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit organized by South Africa on the sidelines
of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
South Africa, which celebrates this year the centenary of the South-African icon Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, has organized the summit in tribute to President Nelson Mandela for his invaluable contribution to peace in his own country and abroad.
Messahel recalled the description given to the African icon by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
“Nelson Mandela melts with the history of South Africa as he embodies the country’s long struggle for liberty and dignity, its fight against the apartheid system and for restoring human dignity, and that has been felt by the Algerian people as their own fight.”
The minister underlined that during the 29th session of the United Nations General Assembly, chaired by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was then Foreign Minister, the apartheid system was suspended and the African National Congress (ANC) was admitted as an observer at the UN.
