Algerian Noureddine Amir elected chairperson of UN human rights committees

NEW YORK- Algeria’s former diplomat and law professor Noureddine Amir was elected, Tuesday in New York, as the chairperson of nine United Nations committees on human rights.
Noureddine Amir was elected during a meeting on the international human rights treaty system, held Tuesday in New York.
Professor Amir had held several diplomatic positions before he was elected for the first time in 2001 as an expert to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD).
In 2017, he was re-elected to the same Committee for a fifth four-year term, starting from January 2018.
Following his election on Tuesday, Noureddine Amir will chair nine independent expert committees monitoring the implementation the core international human rights treaties.
These nine UN treaty bodies, involved in the promotion and protection of human rights, are the Human Rights Committee (CCPR), the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), the Committee against Torture (CAT), the Committee on Enforced Disappearance (CED), the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
