ALGIERS-Regional Director of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) of the International Organization for Penal Reform (IOPR) Taghreed Jaber on Wednesday commended the efforts made
by Algeria to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Jaber was the host of a roundtable via videoconference organized in Algiers by the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), in coordination with OIRP, on “Lessons learned in the fight against the pandemic of the new coronavirus according to international standards in Algeria.”
She welcomed “all the measures taken by Algeria to deal with the pandemic of Covid-19,” and called efforts “huge.”
The Algerian State “has placed the protection of the right to life and health at the top of its priorities as part of its strategy to contain the coronavirus. This is an important vision adopted by Algeria despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic,” said Jaber.
She also referred to the international aid initiated by Algeria in order to stop this epidemic.
The same official focused on the role of justice in Algeria which ensured the continuity of trial hearings, as well as the contribution of prisoners to efforts to ensure the means of prevention against the spread of Covid-19, including the manufacture of masks in partnership with OIRP.
Moreover, she praised the efforts of medical staff, security corps and civil protection services as well as the role of civil society in dealing with the pandemic in Algeria.
