ALGIERS- Algeria has expressed to the Office of the UN High-Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), through its permanent representative to Geneva, its “strong disapproval” of the “unacceptable” remarks made by UN agency’s
spokesperson regarding the conditions in which illegal migrants were returned to their respective countries, the ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday in a statement.
“Following the recent statements made by the spokesperson of the Office of the UN High-Commissioner for Human Rights about the conditions in which immigrants illegally residing in Algeria would have been returned to their respective countries, the permanent representative of Algeria in Geneva was instructed to express, to the OHCHR, Algerian authorities’ strong disapproval of the unacceptable remarks made by its spokesperson and to request clarifications on the reasons behind those unfounded accusations,” the Foreign ministry said.
Those remarks, “based on mere allegations,” and which are “fragmentary and unverified,” are a serious distortion of the truth and grave violation of the principles of accuracy, caution and objectivity which must be respected, under all circumstances, by the Office of the UN High-Commissioner for Human Rights, especially when it regards such sensitive and complex issues.”
“Algeria, once again, stresses in the most categorical manner that in the face of the serious challenges posed by the illegal migration phenomenon, it should, like all world countries, undertake any measures it deems necessary to ensure safety and well-being for its citizens and the legal foreign residents.”
The ministry of Foreign Affairs said illegal immigrants are “escorted back to the border in accordance with the Algerian law, in compliance with Algeria’s international obligations and in the strict respect of dignity and the human rights of the concerned people.”
