Peace process in Mali: Algeria, a key player (Quai d'Orsay)
APS : MONDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2017
PARIS- Algeria, as a leading mediator in the international mediation team, “is a key player” in the peace process in Mali, said Monday the Quai d’Orsay,
underlining the existing dialogue between France and Algeria at all levels on regional issues.
“The leading mediator in the international mediation team, in accordance with the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali of 2015, Algeria is a major player in the peace process in Mali,” said the spokesperson for the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Agnes Romatet-Espagne, in reply to a question on the peace process in Mali during a daily web press briefing.
She also underlined the existing dialogue, between France and Algeria at all levels, on regional issues, especially the peace process in Mali, citing as an example the third session of the Algerian–French Strategic Dialogue, held in Algiers on 12 November under the co-chairmanship of the Foreign ministers of the two countries.
The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the fourth session of the Algerian-French Joint Economic Committee (COMEFA), “allowed to notice the convergence of our views on the implementation of the peace process in Mali,” she added.
In January 2014, Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita requested Algeria’s help for the resolution of the crisis in Mali, whereupon the Algerian-Malian Strategic Committee on North Mali was set up.
Algeria hosted several rounds of talks and negotiations between the different Malian movements involved in the conflict, resulting in the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, also called Algiers Agreement, signed in May-June 2015.
