ALGIERS-Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (Lower House) Mohamed Larbi Ould Khelifa received Thursday in Algiers Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Isselkou Ould Ahmed Izid bih,
the Assembly announced in a statement.
During this meeting, Ould Khelifa broached relations between the two countries, which share a long history, the same religion and language,” highlighting the common challenges faced by Algeria and Mauritania regarding “the preservation of security and stability in the region.”
Both countries should “strengthen their relations” and “work part of continuous consultations” on the situation in the Sahel, which will have “direct consequences” on security.
As for cooperation, Speaker of the Lower House recalled that energy, health and fishing fields “have always been on the heart of cooperation efforts between the two countries.”
For Ould Khelifa, it is important to further strengthen stability in the region part of “the edification of a unified and harmonious Maghreb space based on a just solution to the Western Sahara conflict through the self-determination of the Sahrawi people in accordance to the UN’s relevant resolutions” and “the fight against phenomena that threaten security in the region like terrorism and organized crime” in all its forms (drugs and arms trafficking).
For this part, the Mauritanian Minister reiterated his country’s gratitude towards Algeria for its supports, mainly during the nationalization of the Mauritanian Iron Mining Company (MIFERMA), the crisis with the Senegal and Gambia, as well as its withdrawal from the CFA franc.”
After recalling Mauritania’s efforts for the fight against extremism and terrorism to achieve stability in the region, he added that his country “believes in the need for a just solution to the Western Sahara issue.”
The Mauritanian official expressed his conviction that “nothing would undermine relations between his country and Algeria.”
