Messahel meets with officials of UN system in Denmark

COPENHAGEN – Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel, on an official visit to Denmark, held talks on Thursday with UN System officials in the country, who represent eleven UN specialized agencies.
The discussions focused on the relations between Algeria and the United Nations that date back to the period of the struggle for national liberation that inspired the adoption of United Nations Resolution 1514 on the granting of independence to countries and to colonial peoples.
Cooperation between Algeria and the United Nations was also discussed.
The UN System officials expressed their appreciation for Algeria’s “commitment” and “active role” in the UN system. Algeria has “successfully co-facilitated” with Denmark the adoption of the “important” UN resolution on the reform of the development finance system for align it with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In this context, Messahel emphasized “the deep conviction of Algeria in a fairer, more balanced and more democratic international system in which the United Nations is called to play a leading role, so that there is more room for developing countries and collective handling of global challenges.”
Based on this conviction, Algeria calls for a “reform of the United Nations that is likely to strengthen the role of the UN General Assembly and democratize the Security Council so the historic injustice inflicted on Africa will have to be redressed.”
The Algerian top diplomat also underlined Algeria’s “commitment” as part of the UN action, as evidenced by “the fulfillment before deadlines of almost all the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the ongoing efforts to meet all the commitments made by Algeria …”
He also outlined all the reforms carried out in Algeria, under the leadership of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and “which enabled Algeria to be, today, listed among the best performing countries in various fields, chiefly human development, good governance, the promotion of the Rule of Law and democratic anchoring.”
Moreover, the Foreign minister set out presentation on the Algerian counterterrorism and de-radicalization experience and “the commitment of Algeria to continue its efforts to share more this successful experience.”
As part of this “reconciling approach,” Algeria has been behind the adoption by the UN General Assembly of a resolution which makes May 16 of each year, the Day International Living Together in Peace, “a concept that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika explained in his historic 2005 address to UNESCO on the dialogue of civilizations.”
The UN system officials t expressed their appreciation for the exchanges they had with Messahel, stressing that for the United Nations, Algeria “remains a model for the quality of the cooperation maintained with the United Nations and its active role, reforms undertaken and achievements of MDGs.”
