VIENNA – Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel held talks on Friday in Vienna with Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano.
The meeting followed the signing by Messahel of the Additional Protocol to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty at the Vienna-based IAEA headquarters.
Amano welcomed the signing by Algeria of the Additional Protocol and its “commitment and active role for disarmament and Nuclear Non-Proliferation.”
As for him, Messahel said that the signing of this important legal instrument constitutes “the natural extension of Algeria’s steady and consistent action since its membership to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty,” while stressing” the importance it attaches to the inalienable right of developing countries …to the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and the role of the IAEA in that.”
The two parties also discussed the state and prospects of cooperation between Algeria and the IAEA, as well as the ways of consolidating and promoting it through the strengthening of technical cooperation.
The signing of this Additional Protocol will not fail to open up for Algeria, new perspectives in the access and control of nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes.
As part of the technical cooperation programme, Algeria has obtained a €1 million funding for five major projects, over the period 2018-2019.
