ALGIERS- Chairman of the High-Level Panel on Security and Development in the Sahel Mahamadou Issoufou stressed Wednesday, in Algiers,
the importance of Algeria’s support to his mission aimed to assess the security situation and development in the Sahel countries, as well as the proposals made to take up the challenges the region is facing.
In a statement to the press following the audience granted to him by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the head of the High-Level Panel on Security and Development in the Sahel and former President of Niger, pointed out that this meeting focused “mainly on the mission entrusted to him by UN Secretary General concerning the African Union (AU), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the G5 Sahel Group, that of the evaluation of the security situation and development in all the countries of the Sahel.”
Issoufou said that the mission entrusted to him transcends the geographical dimension of the Sahel countries, namely Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad, to include neighboring countries which are facing “terrorist and criminal threats as well as security and institutional challenges,” in addition to climate, human, demographic, economic and social challenges,” because a lot of them are in transition periods.”
His main mission consists in “examining these situations, given that every State and its allies have a different strategy to address these challenges,” he said, pointing out “that about 20 strategies are being implemented in the Sahel countries.”
“My mission as the chairman of the High-Level Panel on Security and Development in the Sahel is to assess these strategies and make proposals to face challenges,” he added.
Issoufou affirmed the necessity of “supporting all the players in all the countries of the region, notably Algeria as a key State in the region.”
“I’ve come to seek President Tebboune’s support to the mission allotted to me,” he stressed, extending his tanks to him for his advice and support to his mission.
