Human rights: ACHPR hails Algeria’s efforts

ALGIERS-The African Commission on Human and People’s Rights hailed at its 57th session in Banjul (Gambia) the efforts made by Algeria in this area after it examined Algeria’s periodic consolidated report.
“The commissioners praised the efforts and stressed that Algeria, which is evolving in a turbulent environment, has managed to preserve its stability. They have committed our country to continue to further deepen the democratic process through the reforms undertaken in order to give human rights an even greater visibility,” the Foreign Affairs ministry said Monday in a statement.
The consideration of the report “was also an opportunity for inter-ministerial delegation to report on achievements in the field of human rights and fundamental freedoms, recorded since the last report”.
“During the interactive exchange with the commissioners, the delegation highlighted the reforms initiated by His Excellency the President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, especially the political representation of women in elected assemblies, the new organic laws on the electoral system, incompatibility of mandates, information and association that further strengthen the pluralistic exercise, as well as amendments to the codes of the province and the town that give participatory democracy, a stronger content,” said the same source.
The delegation also informed the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights of reforms implemented in the justice sector mainly the consolidation of defendants’ rights, the humanization of prison conditions and rehabilitation policy in prisons.”
Moreover, it stressed that “development plans during the 2000-2015 period have devoted more than 40% of its content to human development with the deployment of infrastructure affecting all sectors and which have allowed our country to reach the Millennium Development Goals long before maturity,” the source concluded.
