ALGIERS- The future of the relations between the Algerian and European parliaments was on Thursday the main focus of a meeting between the Speaker of the Council of the Nation Abdelkader Bensalah and the head of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Maghreb Countries Pier Antonio Panzeri, who is on a visit to Algeria, said the Council.
The meeting was an opportunity to “exchange views on the future of the relations between the Algerian and European parliamentarians, in the light of new facts at the regional and international levels,” added the Council in a communiqué.
“The visit is meant to be an opportunity to outline the future and adopt an effective action method,” said Bensalah, underlining that “Algeria is experiencing a new phase as part of the security and stability, the new constitution which enshrined the individual freedoms and rooted the participative democracy.”
Concerning the relations between Algeria and EU, the speaker of the Council of the Nation underlined “the common challenges facing the two countries, notably terrorism, organized crime, as well as the insecurity and instability in the neighbouring countries, like Mali and Libya in addition to the issue of Western Sahara, one of the instability factors in the region, to which he called to find a solution as part of the United Nations’ decisions.”
Panzeri affirmed that his visit to Algeria is part of the “new approach aimed at strengthening the coordination and cooperation with Algeria which is experiencing radical changes,” notably the new Constitution which expanded the scope of the freedom of expression and democratic practice.”
The same official expressed the European Parliament’s “willingness” to cooperate with Algeria to take up the challenges through the establishment of a cooperation policy which serves the interests of the two sides.
