Attaf, Borrell examine developments of situation in Niger

Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ahmed Attaf received on Saturday a phone call from the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell, during which they discussed the latest developments of the situation in Niger.

The phone talks focused on the worrying developments in the Republic of Niger, adding that the two sides exchanged viewpoints and analyses on the latest developments in this brotherly and neighboring country and the threats posed by them to this country and the whole region of the Sahel in general.

In this regard, Josep Borrell informed Attaf about the measures decided by the EU against those behind the coup in Niger.

The two sides stressed the necessity of working together to exert political and diplomatic pressure for the return of the constitutional order in the Republic of Niger through the reinstatement of Mohamed Bazoum to his post who was legitimately elected President of this country.

For his part, Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s conviction about the necessity of prioritizing the political and diplomatic process, given the repercussions of resorting to force on the situation which is likely to further worsen at the local and regional levels.
