KINSHASA- The new head of the United Nations Mission in the DR Congo – Monusco, Algerian Leila Zerrougui, took up her duties on Sunday, said a release of the UN.
She officially took up her duties as Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), the UN said.
In addition to the mission of supporting the political process and ensuring the protection of civilians, Zerrougui will have to lend her “good offices” for the “full implementation of the political agreement of 31 December 2016″.
The government / opposition agreement concluded under the mediation of the Congolese episcopate sets out the general principles for the holding of elections, the peaceful transfer of power and consolidation of stability in the DRC,” the statement said.
At the end of January, the UN Secretary General reaffirmed the readiness of Monusco and the United Nations system to continue working with the DRC authorities to help address the security challenges facing the country.
Present in the DRC since 1999, Monusco is the world’s largest UN missions by its budget and its workforce.
