Algeria-Yemen: Convergence of views on importance of Arab League reform

ALGIERS-Vice-PM and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Yemen Abdul Malek al-Mekhlafi affirmed Saturday in Algiers that Algeria and Yemen agreed on the need to “address the situation in the Arab scene” and to “reform the Arab League,” hailing Algeria’s role in this issue.
In a statement to the press after his talks with Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel, the Yemeni official said “we share the same views on the need to address the situation prevailing on the Arab scene and the reform of the Arab League, and we have high hopes on Algeria’s role in several Arab issues.”
Dubbing bilateral relations as “historic and important”, Al-Mekhlafi stressed that Yemen remains “committed” to the exchange of views and consultation with Algeria on a number of issues.
The Yemeni official said that he discussed with Messahel “the worrying situation in the Arab world”, and reviewed the situation in Yemen “, as well as the Yemeni Government’s orientations and determination to restore peace, based on the three references mentioned in the Gulf initiative and the executive body and the recommendations of the national dialogue and the UN resolution 22-16.”
For his part, Messahel said more than 400 Yemeni students lived in Algiers, stating that 49 scholarships would be granted to Yemeni students in the upcoming school year.”
“We discussed ways and means of developing bilateral relations and the situation prevailing in the Arab countries, in particular in Palestine, the Gulf and the Maghreb,” stated Messahel.
As regards the situation in Libya and the Sahel region, the two sides broached “the experiences of crisis resolution through dialogue and national reconciliation.” The policy of civil concord and national reconciliation adopted in Algeria was presented on this occasion.”
In this regard, Messahel said that Algeria “which advocates the political solution as it does for Libya, follows with great interest the situation in Yemen”, stressing that the restoration of peace and stability in Yemen, Syria and Libya “is likely to serve the interests of the Arab nation.”
As for the reform of the Arab League, Messahel exposed “the ideas proposed by Algeria,” stressing the importance of coordination between Algeria and Yemen in this matter.
