ALGIERS- Algeria and France are committed to building mutually beneficial partnership with the recognition of historical truths, said Tuesday in Algiers President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
“Such reminders are not bearing any hatred, even though our people still demand recognition of their suffering from former colonizing power, France, with which Algeria has built a mutually beneficial partnership with the recognition of historical truths,” President Bouteflika said in a message to the nation on the 55th double anniversary of Independence and Youth.
In this regard, the Head of State underlined that the preservation of national memory is also important for rising generations, as it will always constitute a precious resource from which they will recharge their patriotism when facing challenges and ordeals, as well as a source of national pride.
“Within this vision, we have enshrined the national Anthem and national Flag in the Constitution. It is within this same vision that the Constitution ensures the respect for the symbols of the Revolution, as well as for the memory of shuhada (martyrs of the national liberation war) and the dignity of mujahideen (liberation war veterans). It is also within this same vision that our Constitution assigns to the State the responsibility of promoting History and its teaching to young generations,” said the President of the Republic.
“Through recalling our tragic past following the French invasion, we are exercising our duty of memory towards our ancestors, as millions of them died as resistance fighters and thousands others were imprisoned or deported, while millions of Algerians were dispossessed of their lands and properties,” said President Bouteflika.
“We are also exercising our duty of memory towards our people, who offered one and a half million martyrs to recover their independence and national sovereignty,” added the Head of State.
