CAIRO (Egypt)- Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel expressed Algeria’s satisfaction with the consensus, reached for the first time, about Libya’s presidential council of the Government of National Accord, as the only representative of the Libyan people.
“I, as the head of the Algerian delegation (to the works of the ministerial meeting), am satisfied with the consensus reached, for the first time, on the presidential council of the Government of National Accord in Libya, chaired by Fayez El-Sarraj, as the only representative of our brother Libyan people,” Messahel told national radio following the extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, held in Cairo.
The Libyan crisis is one of the main issues on the Council’s agenda, which also includes the Question of Palestine, the situation in Yemen and the ongoing preparations ahead of the Arab Summit to take place next July in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
Concerning the Palestinian issue, Messahel said the participants in the meeting listened to a long report presented by the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the situation in Palestine.
In his report, Abbas insisted on the French initiative which consists of the holding of a ministerial meeting on June 3 in Paris.
The Arab league ministerial council welcomed the initiative “which comes at a moment when all other initiatives have failed and all talks frozen, resulting in a deadlock for the Palestinian issue,” the minister said.
The initiative will contribute to “giving a fresh impetus” to the negotiations process, in spite of the obstinacy of Israel which continues to reject the initiative, and which seeks to impose an agenda including “direct discussions and not an initiative involving several States and international organizations.”
