Algeria calls on Security Council to impose respect for peace in Libya

APS : Monday, 06 January 2020
ALGIERS- Algeria called, during the audience granted on Monday by President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to Head of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al Sarraj,
the international community and the Security Council in particular to “assume their responsibilities in imposing respect for peace and security in Libya.”
“President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune received, on Monday 6 January, Head of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al Sarraj,” said the Presidency of the Republic in a statement.
The two officials held face-to-face talks, which were then expanded to include delegations from both countries,” added the presidency.
Held in a sensitive situation, following the worsening of the security situation in Libya, the meeting enabled the “two Presidents to exchange views on the appropriate tools and means to speed up the restoration of peace, security and stability in this brotherly country.”
These talks were an opportunity for the President of the Republic to recall “Algeria’s constant position regarding the Libyan crisis, a position based essentially on the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of States.”
For his part, the President of the Algerian Republic reiterated the need “to find a political solution to this crisis which guarantees the unity of Libya, its people and its territory as well as its national sovereignty, far from any foreign interference.”
This position “has crystallized, since the outbreak of the Libyan crisis, through the defence of Libyan territorial unity in international forums and at all levels, through the aid granted to the brotherly Libyan people.”
The Head of the State reiterated his attachment “to preserve the region from any foreign interference, taking into account the threats to the interests of the region’s people, the unity of their States and security and peace in the region and in the world.”
“Algeria calls on the international community, particularly the Security Council, to assume its responsibilities in order to impose respect for peace and security in Libya and urges the belligerents to end escalation,” he said.
“Algeria also calls on the foreign parties to stop fuelling this escalation and to grant the warring parties their military, material and human support, and calls for respect for international legality in order to facilitate the resumption of dialogue to reach a political solution to the crisis,” added the the President of the Republic.
“Algeria calls on the international community to assume its responsibilities to impose an immediate ceasefire and put an end to this military escalation which is claiming more victims every day… Thus, Algeria strongly denounces the acts of violence, including the recent massacre of nearly 30 students at the Military Academy in Tripoli, a criminal act and even a war crime. Therefore, Algeria considers the Libyan capital Tripoli as a red line not to be crossed.”
Such acts “do not and will not serve the brotherly Libyan people. That is why Algeria, which has always insisted on dialogue instead of the use of force, once again urges the Libyan brothers to show wisdom and to take the path of dialogue, far from any foreign pressure, in order to reach a solution approved by the Libyan people, a solution that will ensure their security, stability and prosperity.”
For his part, Fayez Al Sarraj expressed his thanks to Algeria for its constant fraternal stance towards the Libyan crisis, reiterating his full confidence in Algeria’s efforts to mitigate the escalation by supporting the political solution.”
