ALGIERS-Twenty movies, including fiction and documentary, will be in official competition at the 9th International Cinema Festival of Algiers (FICA) scheduled for 1-9 December, the festival’s Curator announced Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference, Zhira Yachi announced the participation of 9 documentary films and nine feature films.
The feature films “La voix des anges” (The Voice of Angles) by Kamel Laich and “Le droit chemin” (The Right Path) by Okacha Touita, screened in preview, will represent Algeria in this category, while “Enrico Mattei et la révolution algérienne” (Enrico Mattei and the Algerian Revolution) by Ali Fateh Ayadi and “Choisir à 20 ans” (Choosing at 20), an Algerian-Swiss co-production by Villy Hermmann, will compete in the documentary category.
The 9th FICA will open with the Palestinian film “Wajib” (Duty) by Annemarie Jacir, who will compete for the Grand Prize with “Mélancolie ouvrière” (Worker Melancholy) by French director Gerard Mordillat, “Rusty Boys” by Luxembourg director Andy Bausch, “Une saison en France” (A Season in France) by Chadian director Saleh Harounou and “L’autre côté de l’espoir” (The Other Side of Hope) by Finnish director Aki Aki Kaurismaki.
The documentary competition will feature “Les silences de Lydie” (Lydie’s Silence) by Burkinabe Aïssata Ouamara, “Libre” (Free) by French director Michel Tosca, “Central Airport THF” by German director Karim Aïnouz and “Les enfants du hasard” (The Children of Chance) co-directed by Belgian filmmakers Thierry Michel and Pascal Colson.
In addition, five short films are available to film lovers, including “Gauche-Droite” (Left-Right) by Algerian director Mouti Dridi and “Bidoun Hawiya” (Without Identity) by Sahrawi director Nayat Ahmed Abdesalam. This non-competitive category was introduced to the programme at the last edition of the festival.
The films will be screened at Ibn Zaydoun (Riadh El Feth) movie theatre three times a day, followed, for the most part, by a debate with the directors or the film team.
The organizers also planned a master class led by Belgian documentary filmmaker Thierry Michel and a meeting with French director André Gazut.
