RABAT-Speaker of the Council of the Nation Abdelkader Bensalah reiterated Thursday in Rabat the condemnation by Algeria, government and people, of the decision to transfer the US embassy to occupied Al-Quds,
recalling Algeria’s unswerving support to the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to an independent State with Al-Quds as capital.
Speaking to a summit of the Arab parliamentary assemblies and the extraordinary session of the Arab Inter-parliamentary Union (AIPU), Bensalah reiterated the “firm” condemnation by Algeria, government and people, of the US decision to transfer its embassy to occupied Al-Quds,” which represents a violation of the consensus on the political, legal and historical state of Al-Quds, and compromises the re-opening of the peace process frozen since a long period.”
“We regard such a senseless approach as an affront to the references of the Mideast peace process, including the Arab peace initiative and the relevant Security Council decisions, including resolution 478 (1980), which urges the UN member States not to establish diplomatic missions in the occupied city of Al-Quds, as well as resolution 2334 (2016) on the illegality of the Israeli settlement operations in the Palestinian territories and the rejection of any modification of the borders decided on 4 June 1967 including the city of Al-Quds.
Bensalah expressed Algeria’s support to the decisions taken at the Summit of Istanbul, particularly those advocating the recognition of Al-Quds as the capital city of Palestine.
He recalled that the Rabat meeting took place following the US “serious and deplorable” decision, which neglected international law as well as the UN and international legality decisions, and reflected contempt for the Holy places and the Palestinian people’s history.”
The same official also warned against the “very serious consequences” of this “irresponsible” decision on peace and security in the region and the whole world as it contributes to the prolongation of crises and wars, the justification of violence and the creation of an environment conducive to extremism and terrorism, from which our countries suffer enough.”
The Upper House speaker stressed that this was “dangerous development” n which the United States, “supposed sponsor of the peace process,” sided with the Israeli occupation and its policy of colonization and aggression against the Palestinian people, and “disregarded its disastrous consequences.”
According to the same official, this decision “will only accentuate the suffering of the valiant Palestinian people as a result of the arbitrary and repressive practices of the Israeli occupation, the continuation of land despoilment, property confiscation, the building of settlements, disdain vis-à-vis the human rights and freedoms of the Palestinian citizens, the continuation of the unjust blockade imposed on the Gaza strip, the systematic displacement of populations and the Judaization of Al-Quds that affected all life aspects in this city.”
In this regard, Bensalah referred to the international reactions rejecting this decision and calling for the respect for the principles of international law, the resolutions of international legality and the revolt of Arab peoples through demonstrations to support Al-Quds and defend the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. He stressed that “these reactions urge us, as representatives of the parliaments of the Arab peoples, to be in step with events and highlight this awareness by relaying to the parliaments of the world and to the international opinion our unquestionable rejection of this decision, demand its annulment and call for compliance with the relevant UN decisions.”
Moreover, Bensalah called on the international community to “assume its historical, legal and moral responsibility” in the face of the suffering of the Palestinian people resulting from the Israeli occupation and the continuation of the policy of Judaization and colonization.
Bensalah concluded his speech by reiterating Algeria’s “steadfast position” and “wavering support” under the leadership of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika to the Palestinian people in “their struggle and legitimate right to the establishment of an independent State with Al-Quds Al-Shareef as capital, with the 1967 borders, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of international legality.”
