ALGIERS- Minister of Maghreb, African Union and Arab League Affairs Abdelkader Messahel underlined Algeria’s “unfailing,” “continued,” and “loyal” support to the efforts of the United Nations (UN) aimed at seeking a “consensus political” solution to Libya, affirmed.
“I underline, on behalf of the Algerian government, Algeria’s unfailing and continued support to the efforts of the United Nations. It is a full and loyal support to UN’s efforts in seeking a consensus political solution to Libya that can ensure the stability of this country, its national unity and cohesion of its people,” Messahel told the press following the talks he held with the head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNISMIL) Bernardino Léon.
He said that Algeria combines its efforts to those of the United Nations and those of other partners to reach a consensus agreement. “This agreement, he added, is a stage in the process of building a new Libya.”
However, the minister stressed that “the top priority in the current situation of Libya is the government of national unity,” noting the existence of a “consensus at the level of all the Libyan players, except for terrorist groups which are acting, unfortunately, in the absence of institutions and State.”
For his part, Léon said that he assessed with Messahel the situation in Libya, before underlining that this country needs “a government of national unity which is a serious, credible and effective partner in contact with the international community.”
This government, he added, must also work to ensure security through security players, like the Army and militias which must be involved in the process of reaching a final solution to the Libyan crisis.
