ALGIERS-Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City Abdelmadjid Tebboune made a presentation Monday on Algeria’s housing policy and achievements of the sector at the 3rd United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) in Quito (Ecuador).
Speaking at the conference, which is held every 20 years and will last until 20 October, Tebboune focused on the issues of housing and urban sustainable development in Algeria and Algeria’s housing policy since 2000s, which aims at ensuring decent housing to the largest number possible citizens with all necessary infrastructures and facilities (integrated housing), the ministry said in a communiqué.
Actually, said the minister, the policy aims at reducing the housing deficit witnessed by the country since decades and eradicating shanty towns in major cities.
In early 1999, Algeria witnessed a significant housing deficit, estimated at 3 million units. The number of families living in shanty towns at that time reached 350,000.
According to figures presented by Tebboune, the number of housing units built between 2000 and 2015 hit 2.9 million units, including 60% in urban areas and 40% in rural areas.
The different housing programs adopted by Algeria allowed to significantly decrease the deficit to nearly 400,000 units, which is acceptable, said Tebboune.
“Habitat III” Conference encourages the building of socially and environmentally sustainable cities. It is a coordination center of issues relating to urban expansion and human settlements.
