Security Council commends Algeria's role in implementation of Mali peace agreement

WASHINGTON- The UN Security Council on Wednesday welcomed Algeria’s role and the international mediation team in the implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali.
In a resolution adopted on Wednesday which extended the Minusma mandate in Mali to 30 June 2017, the Security Council said it intended “to facilitate, support and monitor the implementation of the agreement, welcoming the role played by Algeria and other members of the international mediation team to help Malian parties to implement the agreement.”
The Security Council considered the peace agreement signed in 2015 by the Malian government and the armed groups of the Platform and Coordination Movement of Azawad, as “a historic opportunity to ensure durable peace in Mali.”
The UN body dubs the agreement “a balanced and comprehensive text” as ” it takes into account the political and institutional dimensions of the crisis in Mali” and the “aspects related to governance, security, development and reconciliation,” while “respecting the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the State of Mali. ”
In general, the resolution assigns seven missions to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), by defining options for the strengthening of staff security the mission capacities in terms of intelligence.
So, the Security Council approved the UN chief request to increase the number of Minusma soldiers from 11,240 to 13 289, i.e. an increase of 18%, and the police number from 1,440 to 1,920.
Under this resolution, the Minusma is called to support the implementation of the peace agreement and to take a determined and firm position to carry out its mandate.
