ALGIERS-Algeria and the European Union (EU) will hold the 2nd session of their high-level dialogue on regional security and counterterrorism Monday in Algiers,
with a view to boosting practical cooperation and meeting the challenges posed by terrorism and radicalization.
The new session of this dialogue, which kicked off in October 2017 in Brussels, will be co-chaired by Foreign Minister, Abdelkader Messahel and the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini, who will be in Algiers for the third time after her visits in September in 2015 and April 2017.
This new meeting is part of the continuation of “collaboration” and “regular dialogue” between Algerian and the EU on the themes indentified during the first session, namely regional security, counterterrorism and de-radicalization, with a view to implementing the partnership priorities set by the two sides in March 2017.
Ahead of the first Algeria-EU high-level dialogue in Brussels, Mogherini had emphasized the Union’s willingness to engage in “genuine” security cooperation with Algeria, “a major regional partner.”
Mogherini expressed the hope this high-level dialogue “will be platform to enhance Algeria-EU cooperation.”
“Algeria is ready to help and share its experience in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism with the EU,” had stated Messahel.
“Algeria enjoys an internationally-recognized counterterrorism experience and could provide the EU with a proven expertise,” a diplomatic source had told APS.
“A support from the EU to Algeria can only be beneficial for both sides,” had affirmed the same source.
