ALGIERS- The Director of the Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA) of the Penal Reform International (PRI) Taghreed Jabr welcomed Thursday the reforms undertaken in Algeria, notably for the development of the penal system.
The Algerian legal system has recorded a “qualitative leap at the legal, organizational and institutional levels, as well as in terms of human resources,” said Jabr, in her discussions with the head of the committee for judicial and administrative affairs of human rights at the Council of the Nation Lamine Cheriet.
The two sides broached “the reforms undertaken by Algeria in the penal field and development of the prison system since 2004, in addition to the adoption of modern mechanisms and the guarantee of a better care for detainees, men and women,” said the communiqué.
They emphasized the “level and quality of relations between the organization and its regional office, which are part of a partnership achieved through the support granted by the organization to the strategy and penal reform programme and the reforms undertaken by Algeria.”
