ALGIERS- Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel has participated, Wednesday in New York, in the Eighth ministerial session of the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF),
said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a communiqué.
During the meeting, Messahel reiterated “Algeria’s support to the actions of the GCTF, of which it is a founding member, as well as its readiness to ensure, jointly with Canada, the co-chairmanship of the new regional working group for Western Africa, added the statement.
The working group has been set up as part of the reorganization of the missions after six years of actions, since the creation of the GCTF in 2011. It replaces the working group on the Sahel, co-chaired since its setting-up by Algeria and Canada.
The minister also underlined that Algeria has maintained a high-level of vigilance on its own territory and on its borders, recalling its different actions and initiatives at the Arab, regional and international levels with a view to promoting regional and international mobilization against terrorism and violent extremism,” added the Ministry’s statement.
In this regard, Messahel said that the African Union has entrusted, in the beginning of the year, to President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the high mission of Coordinator for the prevention and the fight against violent extremism and terrorism in Africa, adding that the President of the Republic’s Memorandum, presented at the last AU Summit, was adopted and would serve as a platform of cooperation between Africa and the rest of the international community.
The minister also announced that Algeria would host the first meeting of the GCTF’s new working group on Western Africa from 23 to 25 October, as well as a regional meeting on the connection between terrorism and transnational organized crime, concluded the Ministry’s statement.
