ALGIERS-Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel on Wednesday met with US Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (NSA) John Bolton
on the sidelines of the Ministerial Conference on Religious Freedoms in Washington, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday in a statement.
The meeting, which “is part of the regular dialogue between Algeria and the United States of America, was an opportunity for both sides to assess Algeria-US cooperation, notably in the political and security areas,” the statement said.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the two officials also “discussed the situation in the Maghreb and Sahel regions, particularly in Mali and Libya, the latest developments in these two countries and the political settlement processes.”
Messahel “informed Bolton of the efforts Algeria is making to settle the crisis in Libya and Mali,” said the source.
The FM and Bolton have also “discussed counterterrorism, deradicalization as well as the fight against clandestine migration.”
Algeria and the US “have close cooperation in the political and security questions, structured in many mechanisms, namely the Strategic Dialogue at the Foreign Ministers level, the dialogue on Security Questions and Counterterrorism which (held for 5 sessions, the last one was held last June in Algiers), the Joint Military Dialogue which last session was held last February,” said the communiqué.
