ALGIERS-Foreign Minister, Abdelkader Messahel and the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Luwellyn Landers on Tuesday discussed bilateral cooperation,
counterterrorism and illegal emigration.
In a statement on the sidelines of this meeting, Messahel said that he discussed with his South African counterpart bilateral cooperation, notably in terms of security coordination between the two countries, violent extremism and illegal immigration.
In this regard, Messahel highlighted the “excellent and strategic” relations between Algeria and South Africa, a country that plays a “major role” in Africa and will be a non-permanent member of the Security Council, representative of the African continent.
The Algerian top diplomat also discussed coordination between the two countries “at both continental and United Nations levels, whether in terms of defending our interests as two partner countries or those of the African continent in international forums,” he continued.
On this occasion, Messahel announced the visit of his South African counterpart to Algeria at the end of November or December following the FM’s visit to the country last September.
In this context, Luwellyn Landers said that some recommendations will be submitted to the next meeting of the two ministers, stressing that his visit to “Western Sahara, during which he provided “material and humanitarian aid to this people, was very fruitful”.
