Messahel meets with Chairman of AU Commission

ALGIERS- Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel has met with Chairperson of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on a three –day visit to Algeria, at the head of a large delegation of the African Union and its institutions.
The discussions concerned the main African issues, included in the African Union agenda, said a communiqué of Foreign Ministry.
Messahel and Faki Mahamat have also discussed the Pan-African Organization reforms, which is a process supervised by Rwandan president Paul Kagame.
In this regard, they stressed the importance of the process of helping the African Union adapt to the current challenges, taking into the capital importance of making this process inclusive and adapt it to the Union’s Agenda 2063.
The two officials also discussed the African integration, on the eve of the AU Extraordinary Summit scheduled on March, 21st in Kigali, devoted to the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Moreover, the Foreign Minister and the AU Commission President discussed the financing of the African Union, which still takes an important place in the ongoing reforms of the Union. In this regard, they expressed full support to the efforts aiming at achieving greater financial autonomy of the African Union.
Addressing the issues of peace and security in Africa, Messahel and Faki Mahamat emphasized the importance of the African coordination to address the challenges facing the African states, including terrorism, organized crime and migration.
In this regard, the role of the African specializing institutions, notably the ACSRT and AFRIPOL, based in Algiers, has been underlined by the Commission chairman, who welcomed commitment and its contribution to establishing and functioning of these institutions.
Messahel and Faki Mahamat also discussed the situation in Mali and the Sahel, in Libya, South Sudan and Western Sahara.
Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel reiterated Algeria’s commitment to support the African Union’s efforts to find solutions to these crises.
